The Sierra Almijara mountain range serves more than just a beautiful backdrop to Nerja, it provides it with unusually warm weather.  Even when there is some cloud in the sky in Malaga, only 50 kms away, Nerja is often cloudless through the protection provided by the mountains. 

Winters are mild, with the average temperature in December reaching 64 degrees (18 centigrade). Summers are hot. On average, temperatures in August reach 88 degrees (31 centigrade).  The Mediterranean Sea provides an opportunity to cool off though, although sea temperatures reach as much as 84 degrees (27 centigrade) in August.
